This summer, we’re offering you a driving route through the 19 municipalities of the Douro (CIM Douro), with obligatory stops, cultural suggestions and moments of contemplation.
Get ready to discover the Douro, from the plateau to the shore, from the vineyard to the castle.
1. Peso da Régua – Starting point
Start your journey in Peso da Régua. Visit the Douro Museum for an introduction to the region’s history, stroll along the riverbank and finish with a wine tasting at one of the many local quintas.
Extra tip: Start here on the famous EN 222 route to Pinhão, considered one of the most beautiful roads in the world.
2. Lamego – Art, faith and tradition
Climb the 686 steps of the Sanctuary of Nossa Senhora dos Remédios, admire the tile panels and explore the historic center with its castle and cathedral. Every street here has flavor and history.
3. Armamar – Between apples and wine
The landscape merges vineyards and orchards. Don’t miss a visit to the Igreja Matriz de São Miguel, a remarkable example of Douro Romanesque art.
4. Tarouca – Monasteries and walls
In Ucanha, cross the fortified bridge and discover the Monastery of São João de Tarouca, the first of the Cistercian order in Portugal. The landscapes are serene and the local products, such as the liqueurs, are irresistible.
5. Moimenta da Beira – Villages with soul
Pass through small towns such as Arcozelo da Torre or Leomil and explore the discreet beauty of this land linked to agricultural production, convent sweets and the tranquillity of the mountains. Take the opportunity to cool off at the wonderful river beach of Barragem de Vilar.
6. Sernancelhe – Heritage on every hill
Explore the Távora footbridges and visit the Mother Church of Sernancelhe, of Romanesque origin, an example of the rich heritage of this land. Another highlight is the Nossa Senhora das Necessidades viewpoint.
7. Penedono – Castles that tell legends
Enjoy the view from the Nossa Sra. da Lapa Swing and visit the iconic Penedono Castle, with granite walls that dominate the landscape, perfect for those looking for authenticity and peace.
8. Tabuaço – Where wine meets art
The road to Tabuaço reveals endless terraces and historic farms. Here, the Romanesque Monastery of São Pedro das Águias and the village of Granja do Tedo are obligatory stops.
9. São João da Pesqueira – Heart of the vineyards
Climb up to the São Salvador do Mundo viewpoint for one of the most impressive views over the Douro. The Wine Museum and the nearby wineries tell stories of centuries-old harvests.
10. Vila Nova de Foz Côa – Rock art and wine
The Côa Valley Archaeological Park is one of the largest concentrations of open-air rock art in the world. Combine the prehistoric heritage with a visit to Numão Castle and the modern Côa Museum.
11. Freixo de Espada à Cinta – Between the Douro and flax
This unique town stands out for its flax production, which you can discover at the Silk Museum, and for its Manueline houses. The Douro International Natural Park offers scenery of rare beauty and unspoiled nature trails. Relax by the Congida river beach for an afternoon guaranteed to be well spent.
12. Torre de Moncorvo – Discover the Upper Douro
Visit the imposing Mother Church, the Iron Museum and the Moncorvo Region, and take the opportunity to taste the traditional almond sweets. The landscape reveals a new dimension of the Douro, more vast and rugged.
13. Carrazeda de Ansiães – History in living ruins
The Castle of Ansiães stands as a witness to centuries and the windmill contrasts with the usual architecture of the region. The EN214 is excellent for those wishing to link plateaus and vineyards to the Tua.
14. Alijó – Favaios, wine and memory
Land of the famous Moscatel de Favaios, traditional bread and Douro hospitality. Climb up to the Ujo viewpoint for a wide view over the valley.
15. Murça – Mountains, wine and olive oil
In the transition between the Douro and Trás-os-Montes, Murça is home to award-winning olive oils and natural landscapes. Discover the Nut of Murça and its history, a legendary symbol carved in stone.
16. Sabrosa – From the Douro to the World
The birthplace of Ferdinand Magellan, Sabrosa links heritage, wine and adventure. Get to know the wine-growing village of Provesende, enjoy the magnificent view from the Miradouro Torguiano in São Cristovão do Douro and visit the Miguel Torga space.
17. Vila Real – Culture, palaces and nature
District capital and gateway to the Marão, Vila Real enchants with the Mateus Palace, the Corgo Walkways and the Alvão Natural Park. The historic center is full of terraces for a break on your trip.
18. Santa Marta de Penaguião – Greenery in the heart of the Douro
Among vineyards on steep slopes, Santa Marta de Penaguião is a paradise for wine tourism. Here, the Douro is intimate, made up of small farms and great stories.

19. Mesão Frio – Gateway to the Douro
Mesão Frio opens the way to the Douro Wine Region. From its viewpoints, such as São Silvestre or Miradouro do Imaginário, you can see the river sculpting hills and valleys. You can also learn about the history of the Varatojo Franciscan Convent, an ideal place to start – or end – this trip.
