Armamar

The land of wine and apples, Armamar is located in an area of geographical transition, with the wonderful Douro Valley to the north, marked by the amphitheatre of its vineyards, and the Beira plateau to the south, with the notable contours of the Senhora da Piedade, Senhora da Graça and Senhora da Saúde mountains. Enjoying the landscape from the different viewpoints, visitors are surprised by the beauty of the crops that follow the contours of the land, along with the granite soils, gorse, broom and pine forests, which contrast with the extensive groves and orchards. In Armamar, the vestiges of its medieval origins invite visitors to stroll through the streets of its historic center, where you’ll find the Igreja Matriz de São Miguel, a National Monument and Romanesque temple from the 12th century. In addition to the town, there are picturesque villages with churches and chapels, some rich in gilded wood carvings and wooden images of great aesthetic value, as well as the Celtic fort, the necropolis in a reasonable state of preservation, the Roman milestones and the medieval tombstones. It was home to the Cistercians, has signs of Nazoni and aristocratic families, in short, vestiges that recall and tell stories of Armamar’s past and the origins of its people.
