Lamego

A CITY WITH A CENTURIES-OLD HERITAGE AND CULTURE

An ancient city, dating back to Roman times, it was definitively reconquered in 1057 by Ferdinand the Great of Leon from the Moors.

When the districts were established in 1835 by a reform of Mouzinho da Silveira, Lamego was initially planned as the district seat, but that same year the seat was moved to Viseu, due to its more central position.

It was in Lamego that the legendary Cortes de Lamego took place, where Afonso Henriques was acclaimed King of Portugal and the “Rules of Succession to the Throne” were established.

It is the seat of the diocese of Lamego (the only Portuguese diocese that does not correspond to a district capital), and there are numerous religious monuments in the municipality, including the Cathedral, the Church of São Pedro de Balsemão and the Sanctuary of Nossa Senhora dos Remédios, which also gives its name to the “Pilgrimage of Portugal”, considered in 2020 to be one of the 7 Wonders of Popular Culture in Portugal, and which takes place every year in September, with its highest point on the 8th with the Majestic Triumphal Procession in Honor of Our Lady of Remedies.

It is also known for its gastronomy, in which its hams and “roast kid with oven rice” stand out, as well as for its wine production, particularly Port wine, of which it is part of the Demarcated Region, and sparkling wines.
