Mesão Frio

The municipality of Mesão Frio is one of the oldest in the Douro region, having been granted a charter in February 1152 by order of King Afonso Henriques. It is located in the district of Vila Real, with the town center situated on a small plateau at an altitude of 380 meters, overlooking the Douro and Teixeira rivers.

The town of Mesão Frio is located on the slopes of the Marão mountain range and in front of the Meadas mountain range. It is bathed by the River Douro, as well as the Teixeira and Sermanha tributaries.

Framed by vineyards, the town stretches along the terraces of the Serra do Marão to the banks of the River Douro, in a landscape dotted with manor houses and churches that amply reflect the Douro’s most prosperous era – the 18th century.

Geographically, Mesão Frio marks the beginning of the Douro Wine Region, considered a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2001.
