Peso da Régua

Recognized as one of the most iconic cities in the Alto Douro Wine Region, Peso da Régua’s history is intrinsically linked to the history of the oldest demarcated and regulated wine region in the world. It was here that, in August 1756, Marquês de Pombal set up the headquarters of the Companhia Geral da Agricultura das Vinhas do Alto Douro, which is now home to one of the most important national museums: the Douro Museum.

Bathed by the Douro River, which was once fundamental to the sale of fortified wine and is today the main gateway to a World Heritage Region, the city is marked by a breathtaking landscape that can be admired at its most splendid from the Miradouro de S. Leonardo de Galafura, where Miguel Torga so often found inspiration.

Here, from the hands of the men and women of the land, rabelo boats are born, Régua sweets, light and aromatic white wines and warm and velvety reds, and the finest of all wines: Port.

The connection to wine and vineyards continued and, in 2019, it was elected City of Wine, promoting the best of the municipality around the world, as well as the election of the Douro as “European City of Wine” in 2023.
