S. João da Pesqueira

The municipality of Sabrosa is today one of the main gateways to the magnificent Douro Demarcated Region and one of the region’s main wine references.

It is flanked to the north by the municipalities of Vila Pouca de Aguiar and Murça, to the east by Alijó, to the west by Vila Real and Peso da Régua and to the south by the River Douro.

With an area of 157 km2 and subdivided into 12 parishes, it has two very distinct geological realities, which over time have influenced the landscape and the way of life of its people. To the north, granite reigns, and it is from the cultivation of cereals, pine trees, cattle breeding and rock quarrying that most people survive. To the south, the landscape, dominated by schist, vineyard terraces and the River Douro, is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Scattered throughout the county are interesting examples of sacred art, churches, chapels, sanctuaries, many manor houses, ancient monuments and archaeological remains that will surprise you in every nook and cranny or in any village. The
land of Fernão de Magalhães, protagonist of the first voyage of circumnavigation, it is also the birthplace of Miguel Torga, a great name in universal literature, who was born in the village of São Martinho de Anta.
