Santa Marta de Penaguião

Spread from the basin of the River Corgo to the top of the Serra do Marão, the municipality, steeped in legends and traditions, is laid out along the hillside, integrating ancient castros from which the current settlements have emerged, having constituted, in the medieval period, the Judgment of Penaguião. A differentiated territory, strongly linked to the creation of the Douro Demarcated Region through the figure of Friar João de Mansilha, it has been home to multiple agricultural activities, from wine production in the deepest valleys to the mountain economy, which develops around the ecosystems of the Serra do Marão. Along the geological fault on which it rests, an ancient Roman road was installed, a network of paths, as well as National Road 2, which is strongly associated with the municipality’s identity.
