With what may be the most beautiful landscapes in Portugal, the 226 km of curves and counter-curves that make up the National 222 road link Mafamude, in Vila Nova de Gaia, to Almendra, in Vila Nova de Foz Côa.
This road, whose Lamego – Bateiras (São João da Pesqueira) section makes it get considered the most beautiful road in the world, and by many a must-see for motoring enthusiasts, seduces all who pass by, offering them three UNESCO World Heritage sites.
The first, the Douro Wine Region, which accompanies the traveler for most of their journey, the breathtaking views of the terraced vineyards and some of the most famous Port wine cellars, which together with the many restaurants located in the region, its culture and the hospitality of the people who live there, is like an open-air museum of all the best Portugal has to offer.
Another, the Ribeira do Porto, which grows from the banks of the River Douro to the heart of the Invicta city, characterized by the colors of the typical Portuguese houses and the rabelo boats, and is also crossed by the magnificent Luís I bridge, which links Porto to Jardim do Morro, in Vila Nova de Gaia.
Today, it is full of cafés and restaurants that allow you to enjoy a wonderful meal while taking in the scenery around you and the music played by the various street artists who often stop there.
Finally, near the end of your route along National Road 222, there are the Côa Valley Rock Engravings.
The Côa Valley Archaeological Park is also a must for anyone passing through. The area is characterized by a concentration of rock art made up of stone engravings dating back to the Upper Palaeolithic period (22,000 b.c. – 10,000 b.c.), which will take you on a journey through the past.
