Tabuaço’s heritage is a fascinating journey into the past. The preserved village of Granja do Tedo and the wine-growing village of Barcos are remarkable examples of what daily life was like for our ancestors. The rock engravings of Cabeço das Pombas, the Citânia and Menir aas Chãs em Longa and Cabeça do Guerreiro are other examples of the riches of the past.

For lovers of religious heritage, here are some suggestions: the Marian Sanctuary of Nossa Senhora do Sabroso, the Mother Church of Granja do Tedo, the Mother Church of Tabuaço, the Mother Church of Barcos and the Romanesque Monastery of São Pedro das Águias.

 Handicrafts:

Tabuaço’s handicrafts are linked to the creation of pieces and instruments related to local culture and traditions. You can also find traditional basketry, used during the grape harvest, and the construction of the region’s typical houses in schist stone. Throughout the municipality you can find lace makers, weavers and embroiderers.

 Gastronomy:

Tabuaço’s gastronomy is linked to the way of life of our ancestors, offering a cuisine of traditional flavors. In farmers’ homes, there was no store that didn’t raise pigs and no fireplace that didn’t dry the smoked meat. The specialty is the kid stuffed with giblets accompanied by oven rice. Wild boar is another highlight that is much appreciated by those who visit the municipality. The famous river fish, fried in olive oil with a pickling sauce, are another highlight of the region. Tabuaço is synonymous with excellent wine and olive oil, either for tasting or to accompany a meal. The region’s traditions include the famous bolo-rei (king’s cake) and the folar (olive oil cake). In addition to these typical sweets, there are other characteristic desserts such as vermicelli, egg pudding, chestnut sweets…
