17th-century gilded wood altarpiece of the chapel of Fornos
Description
The 17th-century gilded carved high altar is located in the chapel of Fornos, situated in the Union of Parishes of Lagoaça and Fornos, in the municipality of Freixo de Espada à Cinta.
Despite its simplicity and simple exterior ornamentation, the chapel of Fornos contains inside a true treasure known to few. Its 17th-century gilded wood carved high altar is classified as a Property of Public Interest and features a succession of six archivolts decorated with masks and plant elements, "putti" and elements of the Passion of Christ, interrupted by rays. In the center is an open dressing room with a coffered ceiling and a stepped tribune.
The gilded wood carving on this high altar is a sculptural technique closely associated with architecture and widely used in the Iberian Peninsula during the Baroque period, in which the wood of the high altar was carved and then coated with a gold film, highlighting the play of volumes.
