Description
One of the most beautiful religious buildings in the whole of Trás-os-Montes. The chapel was built in 1692 and its carved stonework stands out. The building as a whole is in the Baroque style, albeit balanced. Its main façade, which is rigorously symmetrical, features three horizontal planes. The first consists of the main door, its ornaments and access. It is a harmonious and beautiful group, pointing towards the entrance to the small temple. The door, from which two rows of four cushions stand out, with the lower three finished in rose, is flanked by four Solomonic columns. These, which are carved from granite, have stylized figures of plants and animals inlaid on them, which intertwine. The pillars are merely decorative. The small landing is surrounded by a simple wrought iron railing, planted there in the first half of the 19th century. The columns support an interrupted pediment flanked by two simple octagonal windows that let light into the choir. This inaugurates the second level. The coat of arms of Melo de Vasconcelos Guedes, Counts of Murça, was affixed between the two ends in the middle of the last century. This subset ends with the entablature that serves as the base for the cymatium, in the shape of a triangle, the third and final plan. In the center, set in an appropriate niche, flanked by two twisted columns and resting on a support with horizontal striations, the beautiful image of the patron saint, Our Lady of the Conception, stands out in granite. On either side are two rose windows, each bearing its own inscription. The one on the left reads: "Sapientia edifiicavit sibi domum et excidit columnas septem", which translates as: "Wisdom built a time for herself and carved seven columns with it in mind". And on the right: "Quam terribilis est locus iste: hic est domus Dei et porta coeli", which translates as "How terrible this place is: this is the house of God and the gate of heaven". The edges of the triangle are edged with volutes, branches and flowers. At the top is a cross with equally twisted arms. On either side, extending from the side walls, there are two restrained and beautiful pinnacles. All in all, it imitates a 17th century altarpiece, this time carved in granite, and granite from Murça.
