Sete Esquinas Chapel

Description

The building of the Capela das Sete Esquinas (Chapel of the Seven Corners), or Capela de Nossa Senhora do Desterro (Chapel of Our Lady of the Exile), was built between the 17th and 18th centuries, in the proto-Baroque artistic period, evidenced by its decorative restraint and the linearity of the portal. Originally adjoining a walled farm that included a manor house, it has a centralized hexagonal floor plan, unusual in this area, with remarkable stonework on the exterior and interior, especially on the main façade where the portal stands out, topped by the coat of arms of the family that had it built, and by the full-turn arch, based on pilasters, which houses the altarpiece or reliquary on the adjacent wall. The restoration of the Chapel of the Seven Corners was distinguished by the Douro Architecture Prize with an Honorable Mention in 2010.
