Description
The foundation of the Franciscan Convent does not have a precise date. It is very possible that the building to house the Franciscan friars began to be built in 1724 and that its completion became a fact only 20 years later. Between one date and another, the Third Order of St. Francis, under whose direction the friars once lived, appears next to the convent church. Inside the Cloister of the Convent, you can see underground stairs leading to a tunnel. People created the legend that from there there would be an underground tunnel and a path across the River Douro to the Convent of Barrô, in the municipality of Resende. Today, and since 1834, this building has been home to the various judicial, administrative and local authority offices in the municipality of Mesão Frio.
