São Nicolau Church

Description

The Church of São Nicolau was profoundly altered in the 18th century. It is said to be a Romanesque temple, but even the version that the original temple was founded by Queen Dona Mafalda lacks documented evidence to legitimize its antiquity. Many authors want to prove the antiquity of this temple by the thickness of its thick walls, but its architectural layout is a 19th century reconstruction. Inside the Church of São Nicolau, in addition to the precious carvings and rare objects of sacred worship, the tomb of D. Francisco Souto Maior Pinto, a nobleman who was Governor of Angola and Captain-General of the Kingdom, is embedded in the side wall facing east. Opposite this tomb, a chapel was built in 1595, in which the arms of António de Azeredo e Vasconcelos, its founder, were carved. The paintings in the sacristy are attributed to Manuel Arnau.
