Granja Do Tedo Mother Church

Description

The Mother Church of Granja do Tedo was built during the 17th century, between 1621 and 1623, by Abbot José Francisco. It was later altered during the 18th, 19th and 20th centuries. Its façade is topped by a tower with two bells facing east. It has a large nave from which you ascend to the chancel via a nine-step staircase. The interior of the church shows an excellent scenographic effect caused by the combination of Mannerist, Baroque and Rococo elements, which make it a prime example for studying the evolution of the Baroque in this region. The Joanine carving of the high altar, where the beautiful images of the patron saints, Faustino and Jovita, hang, is extremely rich. The nave is covered by a paneled ceiling with 63 figures of saints painted in coffered ceilings, while the chancel has a further 21 panels with floral motifs. The altar of the souls, to the left of the nave, is a precious eighteenth-century work in which a sea of fire rises from a black cauldron.
