The waterfall has been an object of interest since the mid-18th century and is mentioned in the Parish Memoirs of 1758, where the local parish priest highlights the existence of a steep, slippery slab where the waters of the Ribeiro do Síbio flow through. He also mentions that, according to popular belief, this is where the sorceresses go at night to do "their customary dances and revelry" and this fact was mentioned among the prisons of the Holy Office. With regard to the surrounding landscape, in addition to the vineyards and olive groves, it is possible to identify two iconic buildings of rare beauty in the Douro Valley, the Numão Castle, classified as a National Monument since 1910, and Quinta do Vesúvio, a property linked to the history of the Douro through its legendary owner Dona Antónia Ferreira, better known as Ferreirinha.
