Penedo Durão Viewpoint

Description

Known as the "Dean of Viewpoints", for being the most emblematic of the Miradouros in the municipality of Freixo de Espada à Cinta and one of the "tourist wonders of the Douro Region", this is a place blessed by nature, with good access and breathtaking, unparalleled views of the schistose lands that surround it and the cuttings of the Douro River. All around, various species of fauna and flora coexist, which are important to protect and preserve. The fauna here includes the Egyptian Vulture, the Griffon Vulture, the Royal Eagle and other birds of prey that glide vigilantly over this viewpoint. When you visit Penedo Durão, you'll understand why it's known as the "Vultures' Rock" and the only place where you can see this species from the back... Bordering the Douro International and overlooking the Spanish Saucelle dam, this viewpoint is equipped with a wooden balcony and a stone access staircase. It also has a swing, located in a privileged open space with wide views, and spaces for resting and picnics. The strong, millennia-old rock walls that support it slide steeply at an altitude of 550 meters through a landscape marked by diversity and the aggressiveness of the soil competing with the fertile land that is home to vast plantations of olive trees, almond trees, vineyards and fruit trees.
