Douro Museum

Description

The Douro Museum's mission as a museum of the territory is to represent the natural and cultural heritage of the Douro Demarcated Region, which has been awarded UNESCO World Heritage status as a cultural, evolving and living landscape. The Douro Museum's headquarters are located in the city of Peso da Régua, the result of the restoration of one of the most emblematic buildings in the history of the Douro Demarcated Region from the 18th century, the Casa da Companhia, which was inaugurated on December 20, 2008. Combining tradition and modernity, it is seen as a collective space of memory and identity of the wine-growing region, in constant dialogue with the present, and at the same time, as an instrument for enhancing activities associated with wine-growing, cultural tourism and wine tourism. It consists of a central space - the Exhibition Area - which houses the permanent exhibition "Douro: Matter and Spirit". Surrounding this exhibition space is the "A Companhia" Restaurant, the Shop, the Information Center (Archive and Library), the Reading Room, the Conservation and Restoration Center, the Wine Bar and the Garden Terrace overlooking the Douro River. In the adjoining space is another building of modern architecture covered in black schist panels, where the Education Service is located.
