Description
In an effort to reinforce its heritage and cultural value, the Póvoa de Penela parish council has restored this olive oil mill, trying to keep alive the memory of other times. The olive oil cycle began in the olive groves, with the olive trees being harvested. Once the olives had been picked, they were washed and sorted and then taken to the mill to be milled, where the fruit was thrown into the mill and, by the power of the millstones, driven by two oxen, it was crushed and turned into paste. After this procedure, they moved on to the pressing stage, where the paste was placed in trays where it was then subjected to the pressure of the screw press and also subjected to the "caldas" (pouring of boiling water), in order to release the oil from the paste and then from this oily must, the so-called decanting of the oil.
