Praça da República

Description

Praça da República is the main architectural complex in S. João da Pesqueira, classified as a Public Interest Site in 2013. It reflects the continuous occupation of a community throughout various periods of local, regional and national history. It is home to a number of heritage landmarks: the arch of the Fernandine wall, the chapel and former hospital of Misericórdia and the Távoras manor house, the arcade and the 18th century clock tower. On the opposite side is the old town hall. The decorative and architectural richness that marks the urbanism of this square reflects a time of great economic development in S. João da Pesqueira, related to the production of Port wine.
